At the edge of the lagoon
Faro begins in the streets of the old town and opens toward the water. It is a place to notice the shift between a working city and the quieter landscape beyond it.

Through the Arco da Vila
Faro's Arco da Vila marks a change of pace. The arch introduces the streets of the old town, where the city's history feels more intimate than the open waterfront outside. Look upwards as well as ahead: the original guide draws attention to the storks that nest above the gateway.
Around the cathedral, the orange-tree-lined square offers room to stop. The surrounding architecture and quieter streets are worth noticing before you move on. Faro rewards this kind of close looking, with the relationship between stone, shade and open sky giving the old town much of its atmosphere.
