Canals and the city around them
Start around Dam Square, then let Amsterdam's canals lead you away from the busiest streets. Traditional canal houses and bridges give the walk its rhythm. Look up at the facades and pause beside the water instead of treating the historic centre as a list to complete.
The Jordaan offers a different pace, with narrow streets, independent galleries and small cafes. Keep time for a riverside walk around the Amstel and Magere Brug. The quieter courtyard of the Begijnhof offers another contrast; respect residents and the visitor rules when exploring.
